Infinity pools, sometimes called zero, negative or vanishing edge pools, create the appearance of the pool’s surface extending to the horizon. This effect can also be created with perimeter overflow pools, where the water flows over a flat surface which is usually flush with the deck. When the perimeter overflow surface is raised it can look like a sleek modern monument.
All overflow pools have a catch basin, trough or underground reservoir where the water collects and is pumped back to the pool. Some pools have a “visual” zero edge where an auto-leveler maintains the pool’s water level near the top of a shallow tempered glass wall. Infinity pools are most dramatic when the terrain and grades create the perfect viewing angle. This allows the surface of the pool to visually merge with a large body of water in the distance.
